WHAT WE DO

Community Land Trust - HEArts 1.jpg

Community Land Trust

We established the Mott Haven-Port Morris Community Land Stewards to take ownership of and manage public property so that local residents can preserve a stake in a community profoundly impacted by decades of environmental injustice and economic neglect as well as promote pathways to meaningful self-determination.

Community Managed Waterfront

We envision the transformation of the Mott Haven-Port Morris waterfront into a public space that will provide 100,000+ people access to a waterfront that for decades has been inaccessible. It will also provide a logical solution to climate change effects and protect community residents, private residences, and businesses from flooding, as happened during Superstorm Sandy.

Community Organizing & Advocacy

Community organizing and advocacy take many forms and occur through multiple channels, ranging from direct action and demonstrations to voter mobilization and base building. Our organizing and advocacy efforts include speaking out against mass incarceration, mobilizing voters, and collecting data on air pollution and the urban heat island effect to further our campaign for improved air quality.

Public Policy & Legislative Organizing

Through coalitions and partnerships, we advocate for public policies that promote equity and support the health and well-being of our community and we work to create forward-looking cumulative impact legislation.

Workshops & Trainings

We believe that one of the most effective ways to bring about change is to create a community of informed and engaged residents who are motivated to take action. Grassroots power is what creates resilient and thriving neighborhoods. As such, we are initiating a program to train our neighbors on community organizing, advocacy, and public policy.

Studies & Collaborations

As a small organization, collaborations, studies, and research are key to furthering our advocacy campaigns and to amplifying our work. We are currently collaborating with Columbia University, Pratt Institute, Hester Street Collaborative, and the University of Pennsylvania on several different initiatives.
